Discontinuities in vocational education and training: the influence of early-risk factors and personality constructs on premature training termination and subsequent trajectories

Abstract Background For adolescents, preventing a premature training termination (PTT) and withdrawal from education after PTT is an important societal task. While studies reveal that early-risk factors such as low educational background or selected personality constructs are relevant for predicting PTT, less known about subsequent trajectories the determine them. Methods Using data German National Educational Panel Study, we examine influence of on first (n = 4892) in course using binomial logistic regression model. In second step, by sequence cluster analysis explore trajectory patterns within 24 months 944) analyze clusters PTT. Results We identify 7 different clusters, which three show risk-related (37.0%) with tendencies to withdraw training. Furthermore, our confirms relevance well PTT: qualification, graduation more than typical number years, parental increase probability discontinuities adolescents’ paths. Additionally, it consider traits trajectories: adolescents strong openness tend have continued school attendance indicating constructive career adaptation process, while self-efficacy seem assess their chances labor market positive even without vocational qualification.
